The lymphatic system does not only play a paramount role in physiological processes such as fluid homeostasis and immune cells trafficking, but is also one of the systems crucially influencing aging.
For decades, the identification of lymphatic vascular activators has been the holy grail in lymphatic vascular biology. For this purpose, Prof. Michael Detmar and Dr. Epameinondas Gousopoulos screened a library of more than 2000 plant extracts using a delicate screening method and human lymphatic vascular endothelial cells. Five natural plant extracts were identified, which combined together could enhance lymphatic activation by almost 250%. This became the patent-pending LYMPHACTIVETM Complex, which has been core to the development of the first skincare line that activates the lymphatic system.
In his talk, Dr. Gousopoulos will discuss the role of the lymphatic system in aging, the history of the identification of the first lymphatic activators, and the new era of lymphatic skincare.
About our Speaker
Epameinondas Gousopoulos, MD, PhD, is a Board-certified Plastic Surgeon (EBOPRAS) located in Zurich. After his medical studies, he pursued a Master’s degree in Medical Biology and a PhD at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, in the laboratory of Prof. Michael Detmar. His particular focus was on the pathophysiology of lymphedema and the identification of lymphatic vascular activators.
Following his research, Dr. Gousopoulos completed his training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University Hospital in Zurich, whilst maintaining his research activity with his own research group. His research focuses on the molecular players underlying lipedema and lymphedema development, as well as potential drug-repurposing application against these diseases. At the same time, he co-founded IRAYE, a skincare company that uses proprietary technology developed at ETH to topically activate the lymphatic system of the skin, opening a new era in functional skincare.
