Despite adherence with conservative treatment measures in standard lymphedema treatment, many people with lymphedema continue to struggle with their condition, suffering with greater swelling, pain, disfigurement, and repeated life-threatening infections. Speakers Leslyn Keith, OTD, OTR/L, CLT-LANA, and Robert Erkstam, OTR/L, CLT, propose that a vital piece of lymphedema treatment has been largely ignored, namely healthy lifestyle practices.
Many lymphedema patients may not be able to achieve ideal results from lymphedema treatment and reach their full potential unless healthy lifestyle behaviors are adopted and sustained. Lymphedema treatment must occur in the context of lifestyle practices that promote lymphatic health and function.
In this presentation, they describe the essential lifestyle elements for optimal treatment results: ketogenic nutrition, exercise, sleep, and stress resilience.
